New Orleans ice sculptures

Welcome, this page is all about our New Orleans ice sculptures! If you’ve looked around the site much, you know there are several galleries of New Orleans-related ice sculptures on this site, but I wanted a better way to tie it all together. Because most of the ice sculptures that we do are in New Orleans, many of them are also about New Orleans, in one way or another. And since we all know that Nola is a weird and wonderful place, you get some unusual ice sculptures here that don’t show up elsewhere.

At last count, there were 26 other ice sculpture galleries on this site. This page isn’t a gallery like the others. (Most of the photos DO click to larger versions, however.) It’s more of a roundup and a sampling of what’s so special about New Orleans!

fleurs-de-lis

The fleur-de-lis, or “flower of the lily” has long been intimately associated with the city of New Orleans. So much that the Saints adopted it as their symbol. It is traditionally associated with the Roman Catholic religion and French royalty, and there the association with New Orleans makes complete sense. After all, what U.S. city has deeper ties to France than Nola?

The popularity of the fleur-de-lis has gone right along with the city’s post-Katrina renaissance. Not surprisingly then, the fleur-de-lis is frequently included, either as an accessory or the main focus, in many of our ice designs.

icons of New Orleans

The list of New Orleans and Louisiana personalities is long and rich. Some are controversial, given the regions’s race and corruption issues, but all are colorful. They range from an innocuous snowman that helps out Santa to an assassinated Depression-era governor and a 19th century pirate.

One type of ice sculpture that we specialize in is the ice portrait. Actually more of an engraving, an ice portrait is the most effective way to portray a recognizable likeness in ice. Most of the likenesses in our portfolio then, are ice portraits. Except for Mr. Bingle, of course, because that would be stupid 😉

the wildlife in ice

No, not the crazies on Bourbon Street. You know, the actual wild animals that the area is famous for! Even though there are other swampy parts of the U.S., the word bayou always conjures up images of Nola and south LA. Here are a few ice versions of the scaled and feathered and shelled creatures you find down here.

These designs are especially fun to sculpt, so look for extra special versions on our ice art prints page.

musical New Orleans ice sculptures

New Orleans is a city where music accompanies you from the cradle to the grave. If you’re lucky, you might even get a final musical send-off, in the form of a second line parade. Like no other place I’ve ever visited, music is ingrained into the culture of the city. Of course, the city is known as the birthplace of jazz, and it’s a wonderful place for both large music festivals and dingy dive bars with fantastic tunes.

In homage of the great musical heritage of the city, we’ve done many musical New Orleans ice sculptures.

New Orleans Saints ice sculptures

Can’t really have a page about my New Orleans ice sculptures and not mention all of the Saints sculptures we’ve done, now can I? Again, there is an entire gallery devoted to these sculptures, but I’ve included a few of my favorites below.

Although I first moved to New Orleans when the Saints kind of sucked (worse than now!), it’s always been easy to pull for the this team, even in defeat. And the Saints have forever carved themselves a special place in the history of New Orleans as a rallying point for New Orleans’ post-Katrina recovery. Their first game back in the Superdome was a marker of sorts for the beginning of the recovery, while their Super Bowl victory was proof that New Orleans was back from the dead.

more to come...

I’ve added a whole bunch of my New Orleans favorites to this page. However, as I look at the page, I can think of so many that I left out! So I will be adding more sections and pics to this page as soon as I can. I mean, I have both a Roman Candy Cart and a Nola water meter ice sculpture that I left off! And I’m actually in the middle of a better brown pelican as I write this. So, soon…

Aside from more additions to this page, I will also be adding a Baton Rouge ice sculptures page soon. So stay tuned for that!
